Bukhara, which is situated on the Silk Route, is more than 2,000 years old. It is the most
complete example of a medieval city in Central Asia. Over centuries the city was a fertile
oasis in the valley of the river Zerafshan on the Great Silk Road.
Although in winter it gets very cold, the level of annual rainfall is very low. During all
other time it is quite pleasant. The best times to visit Bukhara are March-April, and
September-October. The most ancient part of Bukhara is its citadel - Ark. This is a
twenty meters high artificial mound, where the emir`s palace, his harem, treasury,
arsenal and casemates for criminals were located.
Monuments of particular interest include the famous tomb of Ismail Samani, a masterpiece of 10th-century Muslim architecture, and a large number of 17th-century madrasas. The main vertical line of the city is the Kalon Minaret built in 1127.
